Governor-General HE Quentin Bryce marks Australian National Flag Day 3 September 2011 with Lockyer Valley residents in Queensland.
She was there to to unveil a framed Flag that was found by Defence Force personnel during the January floods. Speaking outside of the Lockyer Valley Regional Council in Gatton, Ms Bryce said she had seen the struggles and sadness in the Valley that resulted from the floods, but was touched by residents’ strength and resilience.
Friends, I am sure that the symbolism of the flag salvaged from the flood waters is not lost on any of you. Housed in the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre, it will serve as a poignant memento of the horrors of January 2011, Ms Bryce said.
It will serve too as a reminder that this community had the courage and capacity to move on.
