NATIONAL FLAG DAY 2005

Symbols count. From football jerseys to school uniforms and company logos, we use symbols to define ourselves, to tell the world who we are and what we stand for.

The Australian flag is our nation’s pre-eminent symbol. It flies above our embassies in almost every country on earth. It flies in the Antarctic. It flies with our troops in Iraq. And it bears silent witness to those rows of white memorials in our war cemeteries across the globe.

This is our flag and it tells our story. Designed by ordinary Australians in a public competition 104 years ago, it remains our national symbol and merits our ongoing respect and affection.

The Australian flag has served us well in war and peace and should be celebrated with particular pride on September 3.
